What does an endodontist do that a dentist doesn't? I heard they mainly do root canals, but don't dentists do those too?

Endodontists are dentists with at least two additional years of advanced specialty education in diagnosis and root canal treatment.

Because they limit their practices to endodontics, they treat these types of problems every day. They use their special training and experience in treating difficult cases, such as teeth with narrow or blocked canals, or unusual anatomy.

Endodontists may use advanced technology, such as operating microscopes, ultrasonics and digital imaging, to perform these special services.

A regular dentist refers you to an endodontist when you need a root canal that he cannot do. Endodontists also do apical treatments and retreat infected root canals.

some do. But hey up in Canada, just cross nearest border and 2 root canals for 500. That is less than one here, and the added bonus is that its all done in one session. Dentists really soak us here, and the basic health plan is crap. So apart from letting university dental schoolers do you, check it out in Ca! Ps. Prescriptions are filled only in Ca. and they are slow to give pain meds.for after care. They look at you like an addict. Guess its different there.

They do the more difficult root canals. I had to see one to get a root canal on a back tooth that already had a gold crown.
