Wow- Sounds like you have a case of "writer's cramps"- Try an anti-inflammatory medication, such as aleve or ibuprophen, as this will help aid with the pain of this. In addition, a hand splint wouldn't hurt to try, as it will keep the hand mobilized and stable- an ace bandage, perhaps, would help with this issue, also, as it would give ur hand more freedom. Try using ice on ur hand on this site while @ rest, and elevate ur arm/hand on a pillow, in addition. Try Espom Salt soaks to ease some of that muscle strain. Here are some sites below that will hopefully benefit you, also. Good luck, take care, and tell ur teacher to cut down on the Homework, for crying out loud- JUST KIDDING!

Different pen i guess, but if you really are getting Carpel Tunnel syndrome like the guy above said I suggest you speak to a doctor or the school about it. Don't mention that you realised it whilst you were in detention cause chances are they would be tw*ts about it. Just say your hand hurts when you write for long periods at a time and do they have they any suggestions. It's probably not very useful for you to know this but a school technically cannot make you do anything in a detention at least they can;t if your in the UK as you said yr 10 you sound like you are.

If you have a heating pad or a moist heat pad (better choice), wrap your hand up in it. The heat may help. Talk with your MD about any meds you may take for the discomfort (I'm not an MD so I would not even begin to suggest anything).
In the future, take breaks in the writing...even if for only a moment or two.
Another thing you may want to try if you have access to it is a parafan bath. Parafan is a wax with oil in it. The moist heat and oil/wax is very soothing. You can actually purchase a parafan bath machine in many stores (Target, WalMart, etc.). You can also go to a nail salon for a single treatment. I have one at home, and I use mine all of the time in the winter months. I also have Rheumatoid Arthritis, and this machine has been a lifesaver to me.
Good luck to you!

RICE
R - rest
I - Ice (20min on/20 off)
C - Compression (ace bandage, not too tight)
E - Elevation (higher than your heart)
Advil 400 mg/6 hours, unless the pain is super-bad, then take 600mg.
