I recently pulled a muscle in my neck and what has REALLY helped me is to do light stretching of the neck by carefully pushing your neck to each shoulder (to help loosen the muscles), putting a heating pad on it, and then before you go to bed use Aspercreme (it can be found at any local pharamacy or Wal-Mart). You will feel like a new person in no time!
(I was informed by my doctors that if you pulled a muscle heat is best because it allows the muscle to loosen up and not get stiff- therefore preventing you more pain.)

If you have pain on the right side, slowly move your head to the left and hold it, about 30 sec. to stretch the muscle. A cold compress to take the swelling down, also helps.
sorry AMB03, I would advise against heat.
Heat swells, Cold contracts...
