The problem just started tonight that I can't change my gears from Park to Drive (or reverse) or to any other gear for that matter...after some tugging and pulling it will eventually change..what could be wrong with my car?????It's a 96 Nissan Maxima automatic.

First thing make sure your brake lights are working and listen for the electromagnetic solenoid to click. Some times you will have to use that opening just ahead of the shifter and 4" long metal or screwdriver to push the manual release. then have the shifter checked Most of the time soft drinks have the shifter sticky and as the weather cools shifter just won't release automatically.

Its the linkage not the trans take the linkage off the trans and move the trnas part to verify this

i had that on my 1995 we changed the button under the brake pedal and the worked

check if you have the propper brake and clutch fluids
