It's all mission based. EVERY part of the military has its purpose.
The 75th is a Light Infantry Regiment designed for quick response.
SF does things stealthy.
The 82nd can drop in for an extended stay.
One guy cooks, another fixes trucks, armor, helicopters or radios, there are guy's listening to the other guys communications, watching them on satellite, flying the helicopter, loading ordnance etc etc. One without the other just don't work.
An Army of One is one guy/gal doing their job so the other Army of Ones can do theirs

The mission of the 82nd Airborne Division is to, within 18 hours of notification, strategically deploy, conduct forcible entry parachute assault and secure key objectives for follow-on military operations in support of U.S. national interests. The mission of the reorganized modular 82nd Airborne Division remained the same. The 75th Ranger Regiment is capable of executing any special operations or light infantry mission requiring a mature, competent, highly disciplined, and lethal force to ensure the precise application of combat power in politically sensitive environments. To achieve this, the Regiment must be extremely proficient in complex operations during both day and night, in all weather conditions and across all terrain. The Ranger Regiment is the world's premier light infantry fighting force, specializing in raids and assault missions deep inside enemy held territory. An expert in short-notice combat deployments, the Ranger Regiment is a rapidly deployable strike force and is the largest special operations combat element in the US Army. The Regiment uses specialized equipment, operational techniques, and multiple modes of infiltration to capture or destroy hostile forces. Quick and dirty- the 82nd is a division, so nearly 20,000 Paratroopers from all combat and support specialties. It's mission is to conduct forcible entry and secure objectives behind enemy lines, allowing follow on forces to airland. The Ranger Regiment is much smaller and is focused on kinetic offensive operations. Regiment falls under US Army Special Operation Command (so it is considered Special Operation Forces) and the 82nd is a conventional regular Army force. The 82nd has plenty of Ranger qualified Paratroopers, but it is not a requirement like it is in Regiment. Hope this helps. EDIT: All the Rangers in the 75th Ranger Regiment are airborne qualified. C'mon do a little research- Ranger Regiment conducted combat jumps in 2001 into Afghanistan and 2003 into Iraq.

airborne school is 3 weeks and you ONLY run alot and jump off stumps and out of planes alot...
ALL rangers are airborne but not all airborne are rangers
rangers are elite soldiers who are challeneged on many levels, learning many other highly honed skills such as night land navigation, mountaineering, winter survival and many other things i don't know of since i am female and couldn't be a ranger... my husband however works at a ranger training batallion and he says they look like htey're having fun....

Well they both jump out of perfectly good aircraft.
I guess the difference is what they do once they're on the ground.
