I just bought a pocket knife because I've never had one. I was just wondering what that mushroom looking metal thing is in the picture was for.

Everyone will tell you just what the manufacturer wants you to think....it's for voluntarily adjusting that weird looking bolt that the blade pivots on so you can get it as tight or as loose as you want so you can open it one handed yadda yadda yadda. lol

Fact is, that tool is to *tighten* the screw about three to five times a week so the blade won't fall out. Tactical folders like that are notorious for the pivot pin/bolt getting loose REALLY fast and the knife totally falling apart.

The logic behind it was....and I kid you not....that you need an adjustable screw to keep the blade in, but normal screws look positively cheesy on knives. By using a screw that only a proprietary tool would fit, the manufacturer could lead the public into thinking it was a designed and intended characteristic and not a design flaw as it is.

In a nutshell, it's to tighten your blade with when it gets loose every day. Don't lose it!

Ok the steel ring at the end of the knife with the little holes drilled in the edge it's shiny and has 4 holes you use that mushroom thing to tighten or loosen that thing. If the knife is loose you can barely flick your thumb or just hold the knife and flick your wrist and open the blade. Loosen it too much though and it will come off and the blade will fall out. I had this very same knife only mine was serrated. It was a decent enough knife I tore mine up and actually broke it. I was prying something (I know you don't pry with a knife) but the handle cracked and the knife wouldn't close. For something to do small cutting jobs it's ok. Wouldn't trust my life on it. Oh I know what it was I was trying to get one of those child proof covers off of an outlet. The ones you need a butter knife and 2 flat head screw drivers to get off. I hate those things. P.S. had the knife close on my fingers one time cutting a box the locking liners are very soft metal and don't really hold the knife open really well. And you need to use the mushroom wrench to tighten the knife back up every other month if you use it alot.

If you notice on the blade, there is a thumb stud. This allows one-handed opening of the knife. This tool allows you to adjust to tension or speed that the blade will open. You can set it to a stiff open or a more easily flowing opening. If you tend to carry it in your pocket, I would set it more tighter than usual, so it does not open up a bit in your pocket and cause harm to your thigh or pants.

Like the others said to adjust the tension. Although I have never seen a knife that comes with the tool good find.

The tension on the blade is adjustable. The device that you are asking about is the tension adjusting tool.
