I want to buy an used toyota 4runner, but i need to know what year were the best models made. For example I had an 89 model and it was very good, but it is too old now. I want to buy something newer (99 maybe) and the cost should go around 6,000 $US. Please help!!

The best year for a 4Runner was 1985. It was the first year with fuel injection, and the last year of the solid front axle. The 22re engine is great, with plenty of parts available, and great aftermarket support. The styling of the first generation 4Runners is great too. If you still have your 89, keep it!

I really like the 3rd generation ('96-'02). The engines are powerful and reliable, and they are a big step up from the 2nd gen ('90-95). They're roomier, have more efficient and powerful drivetrains, and nicer suspension. They're also available with the electric rear locker, which is a godsend on rutted trails. They tow well, get decent fuel economy, and are great to own.

They do hold their value well so you may need to find one with a lot of miles in order to get the price under $6000.

I have an '85 that is awesome. I just put fresh paint on it and it's perfect...I'm keeping it forever! My mom has a '98 and it is a really nice truck. (Your '89 is NOT too old!!)

I'm not crazy about the '03 and up. The transfer case is controlled by a dial (I like a shifter on the floor). I'd rather have a locker and low gears than the new 4x4 traction control and hill descent control/anti roll-back. I guess I'm just old-fashioned.

The new V6's aren't that reliable anymore. They have some engine problems, from 05 on.
Other than that, the 4runner is a great SUV.
Good Luck!

You will not get a 99 or higher 4-runner for 6k. Try 12000 with maybe 150,000 at best. The best years were 2003 and up.. Although I prefer the old limited shape.
