My friend and I are having a debate about colon cleansing. He says that everyone should have it done and it's necessary for optimal health. I say that it's not necessary, but only optional. I think that the authors of those books and the creators of these colon cleansing programs are just trying to find a way to take advantage of and make money off of people who don't know enough about the human body and how it works. What are the pros and cons of a colon cleansing? Is it really necessary?

It's true that most of us are born with a very efficient colon cleansing system and when it's working, all goes well and we have healthy colons and we feel fine.

But the sad truth is that, whether we know it or not, we ingest a lot of junk in our diet and other factors in our lifestyle can affect the smooth working of our digestive systems. Toxins, parasites, bacterial overload and disease can live in our colons. This can result in a number of health issues: constipation, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and worse.

The human body does its best to eliminate man-made toxins, but it wasn't designed to do so and sometimes it needs help. A colon cleanse can jump start an overloaded system back to normal working again.

I found this blog about a colon cleanse diary that I think is interesting. Check it out.

Yes! colon cleansing is really necessary. If digestive health problems like gas, diarrhea, constipation, or heartburn, put a damper on your day-to-day, you may have thought about a colon cleanse, but you don't have to undergo the procedure to improve your health. Some people believe that removing harmful toxins, as well as normal bacteria and stool via the colon, can help you feel better and improve your body function. But many people may consider colon cleansing because they think that it reduces the risk of colon cancer. However, no studies have shown that colon cleansing have any benefit at all.

If you want to rid your body of dietary toxins and get a clean start, it might be a better bet to just change your dietary habits. Your body will naturally work out the bad foods, especially with the help of fruits and vegetables to clean out your small bowel.

The answer is no, and you're right on. We were made with a perfect cleansing system. Those that say that the colon is holding undigested poisons for long periods of time DO NOT KNOW PHYSIOLOGY.
