Many reserve units get deployed. Usually an entire unit gets deployed, sometimes just individuals.
I am in the Naval Reserve and was deployed to Kuwait. I was an individual mobilization and was formed into a battalion in Virginia before going to Kuwait.

I was in the Marine Reserves for 7 years and have recently rejoined the military in the Navy as a Corpsman. Pretty much it's the same program as any other Reserve branch. One Weekend a month and Two Weeks a year. I can't speak for the Army or any of the other branches on how their reservists are trained. But Marine Reservist go through the same Bootcamp, MCT, and MOS Schools that Active Duty Marines go through before they drop to the reserves and check in with their unit. Depending on the job you choose to do you can spend anywhere from six months to a year on active duty before you check into your unit. After that you start the normal one weekend a month two weeks a year. Also I should point out that you will be held to the same physical standards, and rifle quals as active duty personnel are as well.
As for being deployed they definitely get deployed. I'm not sure there is a reserve unit in either the Marines or the Army that hasn't been deployed in the last five years. My Company was deployed the last year I was in and we spent seven months in Iraq. Current tours for the Marines are seven months, and I think the current tours for the Army is anywhere from 12-18 months right now.
Well that's a brief rundown of the Marine Reserves so I hope it helps you out to make a decision.

Hi... army reserves get deployed alot now a days.. and what the reserves do is as different as the different MOS's and units... there are medical, signal, MP, EOD, dental, personell support.... there are all types of units. if you see it in active duty... you will see it mirrored in the reserves..... the committment is slightly different and so are the benefits... today, iw ould rather be regular army than a reservist...

The reserves are still a federalized branch of the military (meaning they fall under control of the president), unlike the national guard which falls directly under their respective state's government. They often serve in conjunction or in place of active duty soldiers. And yes, they get deployed quite often, especially now that we're in Iraq.
