Ever hear the old saying, "It's not what you say, it's how you say it"?

Well it rings true when concerning things of this matter. You can tell by their tone of voice. The way people say words is an integral part of nonverbal behavior. Volume, mocking or shakiness can be factors in determining what kind of communication is happening between people. A loud tone of voice can signify confidence and enthusiasm, but at the same time can put fear and dominance into the mind of those who hear .... where as whispering can be used as a comforter.

Take note of how the person is talking to you. It could help you greatly.
