It shouldn't be very hard, probably more fast and accurate. The spot you want to aim for is in the sternum area, and it's soft, just below the breastbone I think. Either strike the spot fast with one knuckle on the finger kind of like a poke, two on the hand from a punch, lower part of the pinky side of the hand in shuto, or a myriad of other strikes that concentrate surface area, and you should get a decent reaction.

Depends more on the way you hit them. If you slap them there just right you can knock the wind out of someone.

it depends on your technique. The key of doing this is causing enough contraction of the diaphragm to make the lungs empty themselves it all depends on where you hit and at what angle. one of the guys I train with taught me an upward strike with the top of the knuckles that works pretty well in that area. But even hitting straight on the chest can cause this effect but it requires a harder strike. It all depends

Not very hard but it has to be right on the button. Most trained fighters and martial artists know to breath out when they see a punch coming which helps some.

Not very hard. In the right place, a simple poke with minimal force will do the trick.

my instructor places his fingertips on your solarplex ( your actually holding a phone book to help lessen the impact & it still works!) and he only uses the distance it takes to collapse his hand into a fist. so about 4" or less. Its all about knowing how to strike.
