You must be joking. You won't even get out of the country without ID (especially going by plane).
Get the passport. Even if you get to the airports in France they'll send you back home if you don't have a passport.
Just head to your nearest post office and pick up the forms (if you're a US citizen). You'll need your birth certificate, SS number etc. The forms usually have all the details on what you need.
If you're an illegal immigrant then you'll need to head over to your country's embassy/consulate and request the forms from them. Then you'll have to make sure you can get back into the USA.

The Postal Service can provide you with a passport application, as well as the passport service office in your local federal building. You must have a passport to travel outside the country, and in some cases you must also obtain a visa from the country you plan to visit. You might want to talk with someone at a travel agency to determine the requirements of the country(ies) you plan to visit. In the meantime, get in your application for the passport because it can take a couple of months or more to get it after you've submitted your application.

You will need birth certificates or other documents proving you are an American citizen and picture id's.
Go to the post office.
If you are an illegal alien, the US will not issue you a passport. You would have to go to the country of origin.

what do you mean by you have to be legal? anyway, you need a passport to be able to travel anywhere outside the u.s. in terms of how to go about your passport, you need your birth certificate and a state i.d- you can get it from two weeks to 3months- i don't believe you need a visa because of the visa waiver agreement. If you have to go soon, what you can do is buy a ticket and take it to the post office and it will be done the same day- the catch is they double the price (80+80)

definately not. especially now with all the hype on national security, even though you may be able to get out of the country, you won't be able to get back in. you get a passport applicaiton from the local courthouse, and yes you need papers. at least a birth certificate, government issued ID (licence), social security card. i'm sorry if this hinders your travel :/
you can look for more info here.
