With new cheaper PS3 coming (40GB will cost 400$ in US and around 400 euro in PAL regions) the price difference between 360 and PS3 is going to be very small. Get PS3. Here is why:
PS3 will win the console war, no doubt. Xbox 360 and Wii are so weak from technological point of view, that in couple of years they won't be capable of dealing with serious graphics. GTA IV, for instance, isn't even announced for Wii - this toy won't be able to cope with the game's requirements. Xbox 360 is getting GTA IV, however, the game is going to be released on several DVDs - Xbox 360 owners will have to interrupt gaming process and switch discs (Rockstar complained about this issue). Only PS3 will have it on single BD-DVD.
Let's compare PS3 and XBOX 360:
A third of XBOX 360 (33%) are malfunctioning right from the start. PS3 return rate is only around 0.2%.
PS3 has 8 (7+1) kernels in Cell processor, Xbox 360 -only 3.
PS3 uses advanced tech called Blu-Ray, one disc can store up to 54 gb (in the future - up to 200 gb), Xbox 360 - regular dual layer DVD-9 (8.5GB). It's possible to get HD-DVD (max. - 30GB) for 360, but it'll cost you around 180$, in this case Xbox is going to be MUCH more expensive, than PS3.
Calculations per sec - PS3 - 51-billion-dot-product-operati... per second
Xbox 360 - 33.6-billion-dot-product-opera... per second
PS3 has full media support - USBs, built-in 4 slots card reader (except 20GB and 40GB versions), ability to use printer and so on.
Xbox 360 has USBs and only 2 memory slots.
PS3 supports up to 7 Bluetooth Controllers
Xbox 360 - up to 4 Controllers
PS3 - wi-fi included (except 20 gb version)
Xbox 360 - wi-fi will cost you around 100 $
Graphics are stronger in PS3, due to RSX chip, that was developed by Nvidia exclusively for PS3. To estimate its power (roughly) - take 6800 Ultra nvidia graphics card, multiply it by 2 - get a result, still PS3 stronger, because 6800 Ultra runs on 400 Mhz and RSX runs on 550 Mhz.
PS3 uses technology from AGEIA company. It does to physics of the game same thing GPU (videocard processor) does to graphics. This thing is on sale for PC(special card). The price is around 350$. There is no such thing in 360.
Xbox 360 is widely known for so-called "red ring of death" problem - it gets overheated easily. My PS3 was running for more than 8 hours non-stop with no problems. Sometimes Xbox 360 becomes so overheated, that thermopaste on CPU melts, drips on motherboard and successfully shortcircuits it. That's why in some countries people call Xbox 360 "Coffin 360".
Besides all of this, I've seen disassembled Xbox 360 - regular PC architecture - Billy Gates is an uninventive nerd (as usual).
When I saw disassembled PS3 - it was a surprise - smart architecture, good cooling (don't buy external PS3 coolers - they make everything worse - original system is good), etc.
In 2008 PS3 will get more than 300 games, including Metal Gear Solid 4, The Agent and other great exclusives. Here is the good link to the future PS3 releases. http://ps3.ign.com/index/release.html......
PS3 online is free, Xbox 360 - you have to pay.
There were reports, that 360 scratches discs. No reports on that in PS3.
The funniest thing, that right now there are no games for PS3, that show full potential of the console. Biggest games weigh only 25 GB (Xbox 360 will need more than 3 discs even for those).
On PS3 you can install other OS, such as Linux Yellow Dog, Ubuntu and others. Sony officially lets you do it. There is no such thing in 360.
PS3 HDD can be replaced easily with any 2.5" SATA 5400 RPM HDD (used in laptops). 250 GB will cost you around 170$. In 360 you have to buy exclusive HDD, where 20GB will cost you 100$.
Sony expects PS3 to stay on the market for, at least, 7-10 years. Also Sony reduces price now. Soon there is going to be cheaper 40GB version of PS3.
Sony constantly upgrades PS3 software (free updates for OS) - you get new functions and improvements.
PS3 controller (sixaxis) has a motion control - you move controller - game responds. Wii has it, Xbox 360 - doesn't. PS3 controller is getting vibrocontroller soon (Dualshock 3).
On PS3 you can help sick people by running Folding Home project. Wii and Xbox 360 didn't even think about it.
New 40GB is coming with a lower prive between around 400$ and 400 euros (depends on the region).
I didn't mention Wii, because it's so weak, no point to talk about it. Leave it for kindergarten and casual games.

10 Reasons for Xbox 360 (OK, they're 11 reasons):
1: more powerful than the PS3. The PS3 may have 8 processor cores, but 7 of them are specialised in straming floating point calculations. However in games, the data is not streaming. It's constantly branching to follow the (unpredictable) actions of the player. So basically, a game only runs on the one general purpose CPU the PS3 has.
The Xbox 360 has 3 General purpose CPUs.
The memory bandwith of the PS3 is a joke. It has capeable processors and graphics chips. But why Sony throttled the bandwith at 48 GB/second is beyond me. The Xbox 360 can pump almost 280 GB/second over it's memory buses.
The PS3 is like a high performance racing car stuck in rush hour traffic on a bumpy country road.
See the link below for a comparison between the technical specifications of the Xbox vs. PS3.
2: The price. The Xbox 360 is still cheaper if you only want to play games.
3: if Hackers find out how to rip Blue Ray movies on the PS3, the movie industry can put revocation keys on new movie discs. The PS3 then has to store this revocation key, and is unable to play any Blue Ray movie (even movies you already own) until an update is released that makes it impossible to rip movies.
4: If movies really is your thing: The HD-DVD already can do Picture in Picture streams (e.g. having a making of or directors interview running in a small window while the movie is playing) and other neat stuff.
Sony is currently developing Blue Ray 1.1, which will also have these features, but current Blue Ray players can't play 1.1 discs.
5: The PS3 has a chicken and egg problem. Not a lot of people buy the PS3. So a lot of publishers don't make exclusive games for the PS3. And since a customer will find a game on any other console beside the PS3, too, he sees no reason to buy a PS3.
6: The graphics on the Xbox 360 are better. Take a simple Football game for example. Madden 08 and others run smooth with 60 frames per second on the Xbox, but the PS3 can only do 30 fps. (see second link).
7: Sony reduces the PS3's capabilities wich each new model. First they removed the PS2 chips, and made a software emulator to play PS2 games. Now the new 40 GB model won't even play PS2 games anymore.
8: You can chat with your friends on the Xbox 360 no matter what games you play or your friend plays. As long as he's online you can talk to him or type him a message.
9: You can download TV shows and High definition movies from the Xbox marketplace.
10: You can connect your PC to the Xbox and watch pictures, listen to your MP3s (even while playing a game. The Xbox mutes the game's music then), and watch movies stored on your PC. If you have High Definition movies on the PC you don't even need a Blue Ray or HD-DVD drive.
11: After the battery in the PS3 controller dies, you can't change it yourself.
The Xbox 360 controller has rumble right now.

Listen ill make it short but sweet. Xbox 360- Good console with many cool exclusive titles. Seems to even be stealing some of the Ps3's exclusives recently. Runs well with a less chance of failing now with the new heat sink. Excellent online play with just about every game.Good marketplace to download all your 360 needs and more. Just a bit pricey when it comes to online service and products but that is microsoft for you :) PS3- My sony is doing a very good job with there system. Not many fails or problems known, but there still are some happening here and there. Just about the same graphics for games as the 360. Some are better, some are worse, just depends on how you look at. Just released the new Home feature which many were looking forward too. The one thing that stands out the most is free online play with the ps3, i just wish it was as consistant as the 360's online play. So its up too you.
