Yes, it's thick -- like condensed milk with coconut flavoring. I don't know if this is the type of recipe you're looking for, but I have this one that is very similar to the Tres Leches Cake

Coconut Cake
Mix and bake one box white cake mix as directed for 13 x 9" pan. In separate bowl, combine 1/2 can condensed milk and 1 1/2 cans cream of coconut (Coco Lopez). Punch holes in hot cake, pour mixture over the top. Spread freshly whipped cream, or whipped topping, over entire top of cake, and sprinkle with sweetened coconut flakes. Refrigerate overnight.

Here's one from Epicurious. I think it's good and not difficult. I love a good coconut cake and even add extra after the cake is frosted. Sometimes I put a little food coloring into water and sprinkle it on the coconut, then dry it on paper towels then toast it lightly in the oven. Color choice(s) depend upon the season, etc.
