It's not the EGR system. It's the evap. system like the code says. First check out the evap. line running back on the passengers side and fastened to the finder under the hood. It's hard to see with stuff in the way, but these lines are notorious to split and leak where they connect to another line with a rubber connector. You have to run you're fingers around the rubber and feel for a split on the rubber ends. If it's split, replace it and disconnect the batt. for a few seconds to reset the engine controller. If that's not it, check out all the other lines going to the evap. pump underneath and fastened in the aluminum cradle. Also, a bab gas cap will give the same code. The parts store should be able to test it for you.

Check your gas cap to see if it's tight. A loose gas cap will cause this code since it creates a small leak in the evap system by allowing air to enter the fuel tank (code P0442). Loose gas cap is by far the most common reason for the evaporative leak code.

If you used a code reader to get the code, check the gas cap and clear the code. If you used the key on-key off cycle method, then you will have to have it cleared with a scanner. Some aftermarket parts stores will do this for you at no charge these days.

If it was the gas cap, it will not come back on (unless you leave it loose again). Otherwise, if it is something else, it will come back on and you can then take it in to have it checked out.

Emissions warranty is 8/80, but if it's due to a loose gas cap, it will NOT be covered by the emissions warranty and you will have to pay for diagnostic fees. If still under that, and it isn't the gas cap, then take it to the dealer for repairs. Evaporative emissions is still a Federal emissions issue and should be covered under that warranty, though I'm not positive.

Evaporative emission system has something to do with the fume of gasoline, when EGR valve has something to do with the recirculate to burn again some of the exhaust gas. They are different system altogether.Small leak could be a leaking valve or solenoid in the evap system, some of which can only be detected with a smoke machine, nothing to do with EGR system.

if the egr valve is failing, the code will be an egr code. did you check your gas cap? a small leak usually means a cracked hose or a gas cap. or there could be a problem with the leak detection pump itself. cat converters have specific codes too. so i say a hose, your gas cap, or the pump itself.
