I feel like its never too early to introduce the idea that these things are detrimental, but for a school? I feel they should do it in a way that reaches them on their level.

I don't no much about sunnyvale, but i know its safe to say that elementary school children aren't at great risk unless the parents influence it on them, but I don't think they would even start think to consider doing anything at that young of age. Where I'm from they have a program called DARE, and it starts to help prevent kids form thinking about doing drugs or smoking, but they do it in an educational and fun way so that they don't get bored over it, but still see the harmful effects of it. So its normal for elementary school to do things like that know, so don't be to worried about it.

I am a teacher and the current philosophy of many of my colllegues is "the younger the better" but honestly, most kids are too young to really understand.
Don't worry, they don't expect the kids to start in kindergarten, but some kids do start at grade 6 ot 7 in urban (or rural!!) settings... not so much in the suburbs.
Please don't be scared! You sound like a good mom, and so I am sure you will give your child the courage and morals to deal with peer pressure when she gets to those difficult situations.
She'll be fine. I have worked with many kids who never used drugs or started smoking, even in areas where it was common.
You'll be fine! :) don't worry so much mama!

It's not like kinders are picking up the habit now. However, they have relatives who do, so it's important to educate them on the dangers of smoking and drugs. When you grow up in a home that doesn't discourage smoking, you need something to counteract that mentality.

My child at the age of two knew the affects of smoking and drugs. My five year old now lectures her grandmother because she smokes. This may not be the response you want but I love it. I will do anything in my power to keep my children from making decisions that could destroy their lives.

Sure! You just have to put it on their level. At this point and time in their life I would ask them if they knew what drugs and smoking was. Then I would put it on their level and say its really bad for you and it could hurt your body really bad. Then as they get older you can get more detailed about it. You would be amazed at what a kindergartner learns and what they can do. I have a five year old and she asked me to help her learn how to tie her shoes. It took me ten minutes to teach her to flawlessly tie her shoes!!! I don't know about you but when i was five and trying to learn how to tie my shoes it took me two hours and I was cussing. I learned it from hearing and seeing it in my surroundings. I say be as clear and brief as you can about it when your kid asks or is subjected to something like that. Think about it, you would rather them learn it from you than some stranger right? Good Luck!

It's never to young to bring this up to kids nowadays unfortunately (especially when they have entered school). The pushers are going younger and younger to try and get kids hooked. So, I think at this age the main thing for her know is not to take anything from anyone unless whoever is taking care of her approves it (you, teacher, babysitter, etc.). This means gum, food, candy too. She doesn't need a lot of details and yes, it is horribly scary.

I don't doubt it my 5 year old came home upset because a little boy called her the B word. children today are just exposed to much more. some on purpose some stuff maybe not. talk to her about but no need to get deep into it and keep it in terms she can understand

Research indicates that the earlier we start educatiing students about the dangers of drugs, the more sucessful the prevention programs are. Don't be alarmed, at her age, she is getting age-appropriate information I would imagine. I think that it is a positive thing.

Since elementary school is where children are introduced to drugs and smoking (bathrooms, playground), it makes sense to begin teaching them about drugs/alcohol and smoking in elementary school.

It is alright because while she is still a child at least she knows some informations about drugs,. That will help her to prevent from using drugs and will help her to know what can be its effects on her. but as a parent you should still guide her to stay away from it.
