Actually, it depends on what you value....
In my opinion, there is no real "importance" to knowing one's heritage. Regardless of where I or my ancestors came from, I'm still me. Knowing history and learning from the successes and failures of those before you is useful if you apply the knowledge, but it's not limited to your own heritage.
However, for some people, especially those that make money from the 'genealogy' business, it's very important to trace one's heritage.

1) If you look like you're different, a lot of people will assume that you're different. Therefore, interact with people of your same race to know how they feel.
2) Genetics; you are probably more closely related to a chinese person if you're purely asian than to a white person.
3) Despite what people say about not feeling a thrill when you meet your homeland for the first time, there's always a thrill and a little delicious surprise.

You have to know the past to learn from it and not repeat it.
Your heritage is part of who you are-if you don't know where you are from, how will you know where you are going?
Health reasons-disease targets certain ethnic groups, and families have certain illnesses that are past down.
