I have never been in trouble with the law (besides traffic tickets), and an employer did a background check on me and called me and asked me if the Law enforcement ever been to my house for any reason. (note: I live with my fiance and we have never called the police for any reason on eachother or on anyone else. My fiance have never been in trouble with the law, not even a parking ticket.) Bottom line is, we never been in trouble, only people we know and that's the people who've never lived with us but have used our address before to get their mail.

I don't know if it's legal for the employer to ask, but I would have said, "No. Why do you ask?"

Besides, legally they can only deny to hire you for felonies that may relate in a negative way to the position you are applying for. If you have a felony for grand theft, you won't get hired at a car dealership. A felony domestic abuse or violence charge will usually disqualify you from all jobs because no one wants to risk a violent situation at work.

When they do a background check, they use your name and SS# as your identification. So incidents at your address would have no pertinence, unless you were specifically arrested or charged.

I cannot imagine a legitimate employer calling you and asking about the police being called to your address. Something don't sound right about this story. Either you, or your potential employer, seems to be a flake.

I think her question about that is illegal. They cannot ask if u have ever been arrested, but you shouldn't answer rudely either.

I am sick and tired of employers getting away with invading our privacy and our rights. Do the background check and if it is clean then hire the person. Don't go further then this.

When they ask if police have ever been call to YOUR house, the question only applies to times it was YOUR house. They don't CARE about before you lived there. As long as you can explain WHY they were called, answering YES to this question does NOT in and of itself disqualify you from the job.

Your employer can ask you whatever he/she wants. Employers have the right to set strict hiring criteria. I'm tired of people thinking that they have a legal right to hide something from their employers and still work their. It is their business and they are responsible for it. Sure, you don't have to tell them anything you don't want to tell them, but they also don't have to hire you. Having a job is not a birthright.

You could check to see what might show up on a background check by conducting one on yourself. http://www.eFindOutTheTruth.com
