The very back of my foot, above my heel.

If you want to get scientific, I believe it would be the area in behind the calcaneus bone.

I'll probably get it regardless of pain, just mere curious.

Tattoo's on bone would be more painful than tattoos on muscle. Areas where you have lots of muscle will absorb the needle better and hurt less. The places that hurt more than usual are areas of either high nerve concentration, erogenous zones like inner thigh or areas right over bone like the ankle.

On the back of your foot, above your heel would be painful.

Remember to EAT before you get tattooed! Your body needs energy to draw off the pain ... people pass out because their blood sugar drops from not eating or they just allow themselves to get too worked up and their own fear knocks them out.

While I have never gotten that area tattooed, I can honestly say that a tattoo will hurt regardless of the location. In areas where the nerves are closer to the skin surface, or areas with a large amount of "baby skin" it will hurt more. In areas that have more contact with outer surfaces, for example, the front of the leg, the upper forearm, and the upper arm area , the pain is lessened due to the fact that we develop that area more. The other areas, the inner thigh, the neck, and the buttocks, those areas are not exposed to the same stresses as the others, so therefore, they hurt more. A good product to use is called Emla lotion. It is a topical freezing agent that contains benzocaine or lidocaine in a 25% solution. That will numb the area in question to make the tattoo application easier. Be sure to apply it approximately 45 minutes before the tattoo, to be sure it is at it's maximum effect. That time limit also give it time to be liberally applied and soak into the skin before the artist goes to work. Enjoy the ink and I hope this helps.

In reality whether tattoos hurt or not is based on each individual, there are some areas known to be more sensitive in the greater population (i.e lower back), however, there are people out there that have that pain factor that some others do. The only reliable way for you to find out whether it's a sensitive area is to actually get the tattoo, because it's all based on your pain threshold. I've recently had tattoo's done for the first time and found that it wasn't so much painful just more annoying having something 'vibrate' over that bit of skin for so long. And I got mine on bony areas too as that is the belief that bony areas hurt more, so like I said based on each individual's pain threshold.

Hope this helped.

Yes, this will be painful (but worth it, nice location!)
In my own experience I've found that the back of the leg is more sensitive than the front. A simple test is to pinch the front of your leg, then, with the same amount of pressure pinch the back. Notice a difference? The front of our legs, bony or not, are more used to it (how many times have you bumped your shins) while the back is much more tender.
Enjoy the INK.

Besides the pain factor, a lot of places or artists don't do tattoos on the foot, in areas where a shoe would wear on it.

Every area is painful. Just suck it up for an hour or so (depending on size) and you'll have it for the rest of your life.

I imagine that would hurt because there is nothing but skin, bone, and tendons.

Good luck!! =]
