When I activate it it completly shuts off my highbeams. Why is this? I thought it was so if I had my hibeams on and another car was coming toward me it would turn them off. Answers from previous owners would be most helpful.

Your correct. The switch should just over-ride on some cars, and shut off automatic on others. Normal operation would be on automatic, the lights would dim when an on coming car lights hit the sensor, then return to high when the car passed.
Operating the stalk switch should change the lights manually.

This system never satisfied the owners, and has been abandoned in most luxury cars.
With the advent of new ideas, the mirrors now dim the strength of offending lights coming from the rear. (Go figure)

Probably you have a malfunction, and getting it fixed is going to be impossible due to age.

Thats what it does. If there is sufficient light reaching the sensor, from any source, it will dim. Perhaps the sensor is not aimed correctly.
