with an older female either male or female would do, they both have there plus and minus points but just make sure it is a kitten, as young as you can get, because its best to get a personality which can form around your cat than two different personality's which wont change and clash, just look hard before picking personality is better than sex unless its two males

Well as long as you spay it really doesn't matter. However, in my expierence, when I got a female kitten five years ago my female cat didn't like her but my male cat did. Even today, the girls are rarely ever in the same room as each other, but the male gets along with both females.

Depends if you want babies or not. If they're all fixed it's not really an issue.

However, I have noticed that generally, male cats are a bit more hyper. In general, there have been exceptions, but the most hyper cats we've had have all been male.

Well if you want babies get a male. If you don't want babies, but want a male get one or two of them fixed. Also if you want a calmer cat get a female if you want an excited one get a male.

Unless you want babies, then no. You should just get a female.

If both kitties are going to be fixed, gender doesn't matter.
