We don't need superb quality - it's not video, just a slide show presentation. Can it work at all?

Yes, but you will need a HIGH lumens projector. I would guess at least 10k lumens. Most boardroom type and small portable projectors are between 2k and 6k lumens.

Like the other guys said, it's difficult. Look at the screen: if it looks white, that is how dark the projected black will be. Screens with high gain will help, but they won't be as visible to people off to the side. Get as much shade on the screen as possible.

You may be able to superimpose the pictures from two projectors for more brightness; this was sometimes done in high-end home theaters to get brighter pictures. If you have access to more than one projector, give it a try.

Well the short answer is yes however although visable it is unlikely to be of a high quality unless it is well shaded. A high powered globe will be a start and a specialised screen would also help. These are the solid type you purchase at you local gizmo shop. I would suggest you look at making the outside as dark as possible maybe with a pull down awning this would certainly help. Myself I use a normal TV 80cm.

How about using a rear-projection screen? It cuts down on the light level you need to throw from the projector.
Depending how big you need, you can pick up a 50" lenticular screen (used in rear projection TV's) for as little as $40.

It's all in the Foot lumens my friend. The higher the number the more visible the picture.
