I have been going through depression for a while now; I got up the courage to go to a doctor and talk about it. He gave me a prescription for an anti-depressant called Lovan. I read some information about it and some side effects which are changes in vision, tremors, dizziness, dry mouth etc. It has me scared; I do want to get better but I don’t know if these drugs are the answer.

I just want to know are there any people out there who have tried herbal remedies or natural drugs that have worked for them?

instead of jumping straight to drugs why not find a friend that would listen to you and confide in them it makes them feel better because they feel you trust them and u feel better for being able to talk about it or if you would rather not do that talk to a psychiatrist

Depression is different for everyone. So you just need to find the thing that works for you. I'm guessing that since your doctor was a psychiatrist since he was quick to just give you some drug. While drugs may help they aren't the answer. There is something called "talk therapy" that works just as well. I know people who haven't taken drugs and talk therapy have worked for them. Drugs just cure the symptoms, but they don't address the underlining problems and have side effects. I dont' know if you've already started with the medication. Its better not to start. But if you have already, DON'T ABRUPTLY STOP (doing so can make you suicidal), unless you talk to your doctor (btw there's no problem with seeking a second opinion, so you could find another doctor. You should look for a "psychologist" (not psychiatrist) in your area to talk about it more. It does take a few sessions to see results so hang in there. I know its a hard time in you life. But just keep at it and you'll pull though.

Try www.webmd.com. It has a lot of very accurate and reliable info about depression.

you tried the doctor but now try to get counseling and see if they can find a reason there for depression. You can also try to get more exercise - join a gym for example and you will get exercise which may help but also meet new friends which may help also. If you check the link I will include here you will see other things to perhaps try but sometimes not all things work for all people and some things which you may not think of which has been shown to help with depression Omega-3 for example. you can read the articles here and perhaps find something which will help I hope.

take the medicine, if you don't like it, you can ask your doctor to change your prescription. remember, its not going to kill you, and taking it once probably wont cause any long term effects.

Try SAM-E and multi-vitamin, get lots of sleep, drink water, stay far away from sugar and carbs.
