George, my six-month-old male kitten, has been acting strange for a few days now. He is normally very sweet and loving; always wants to cuddle and be petted (to the point that it's almost annoying if he weren't so cute...) For the past three or four days, though, he's been really moody...edgy, jumpy, kind of startled when I go to pet him, doesn't want to snuggle or be held like usual. I don't know what his deal is, but I'm worried because he never usually acts like this. He doesn't really act sick...he doesn't seem to be in pain, he's still playful and energetic, just really wired and jumpy.

I'm taking him to the vet next week to get neutered (his littermate, my other cat, is getting spayed that day as well). I don't know - could this be a "puberty" thing? I have noticed him licking himself "down there" a lot more often lately...he seems kind of fixated on it, actually. I don't know if that's significant or not...

So, any ideas as to what's going on with little George?? Thanks!

It cold be puberty, or he could be in pain. Cats are wired to hide pain, and they typically do it by being mean to other cats and humans.

He could have a bladder infection, which is common in males, especially if they don't get enough water. Or he may have an impacted anal gland, that happened to my kitten recently, she was really uncomfortable. But my vet fixed her right up. Don't wait to take him to the vet, because if he is sick, they won't be able to neuter him next week.

It could be two possible things. The first one is bad, and that he's got a urinary tract infection or blockage of some sort. If he's urinating in his litterbox every day though, it probably isn't that.

What's most likely going on is he's hitting puberty, and if your female kitten goes into heat before they're both sterilized then you could have a litter of problems. The reason I think it's this, is that my kitten was the same as yours. Extremely loving, but around the six month period got a lot more aggressive. Neutering does fix a lot of that aggressiveness though, so don't worry he'll still be a loving little thing.

Well as long as he isn't showing other signs of being ill I suggest you mention it to the vet when you take him in to get him fixed. Just keep an eye out for him. Is he and your other cat getting along ok? Maybe something spooked him. We also have a kitten that went thru this and now seems to be fine. It was an adjustment period that he went thru.

Sounds like your cat may be sick,

When your cat shows changes in personality usually it is a sign of sickness of some sort...

when they lick their penis alot could be a sign of bladder problems.
Is he eating, and drinking water?
Make sure he is urinating....if he is not and seems to be straining...take him to vet immediately...he could be blocked and can die w/in 24 hours, due to poisons building up in body.

It probably is, as you aptly term it, a 'puberty thing'.

The vet will give him a check-up before neutering him, and tell you if he sees any problems that might need attention.

Good luck!

call the vet and describe George's symptoms and see if your baby needs to go in sooner. my male cat has always been licking himself in that same spot and doesn't care who knows it
