How long should a guy wait to formally ask a girl is she would go out with him?

I've known this girl for 2 weeks, and my friend(guy) who is a good friend of her's is telling me im going too "slow"; he tells me i need to start holding her hand and then go for the kiss to "seal" the "deal".
It seems to me like thats too fast. i mean i already know her well, and she is hard to "read", for ME, but i think she diggs me.My problem is I dont know if she, OR I for that matter, is comfortable with going that fast. But i dont want to "bore" her and i dont want to trick her into thinking that there is nothing there by waiting too long.
And im not just lookin to get laid here either, so dont give me that s&*t.
She is 19, Im 19.
What is the "norm" for this situation?
Im pretty serious about this. I dont know what to do. I dont want to mess things up. AND I WONDER IF MY FRIEND KNOWS SOMETHING I DONT. should i ask him?
I was just thinking: just get a little more comfortable with her, you know, a little more open, and THEN when the time is right, formally ask her out.

Girls, what shoud i do?

never been in a REAL relationship!

There's this old story. You might of heard it. One day, Papa bull and his young son were up on a hill looking down at a pasture of cows. The young bull said to Papa bull, "Lets run down and get that cow that's real close in our sights." Papa bull replied back to him, "No, lets walk down and get them all."

The moral of the story is patience and self-control, and when it comes to dating, you can never go too slow, you can only go too fast. First off, never listen to friends. They confuse things, they can have their own agendas, etc. If you want to know how someone feels, go directly to the horses mouth as they say.

Secondly, don't worry about not holding her or kissing her. You'll know when she's ready. Let her beg for it, let her touch you first. You'll then kiss her when she's practically salivating for it. Delayed gratification turns girls on. It's almost like when you waited, and waited for that Christmas gift, and then when you got it, it made it that more special. You want her to think, gee, he's different then all the other guys who have tried to get into my pants right away. I like this guy. I always say, reserve the kiss for the third date or third week.

Remember, no girl likes a minute man, and that can be applied to making the first move too quickly, also.
