the reason for my being out of work is my wife took a job that required traveling and was making very good money so we tried to save money by not paying for day care....

just explain to them that you was a stay at home dad. my husband did it for 3 years and man did I enjoy that. i made more money by him staying home and caring for the kids. i think as long as you qualify for the job u should get it. there is no difference then a woman staying home with the kids. why can't a man do the same?

My husband had a similar problem, so when I wrote up his resume I put down that he worked as a independent contractor, and told him when he when to interviews that he should say he wanted to get out of it because he wasn't making any money at it (he tried and failed)

It wasn't an outright lie in his case because he did remodel the kitchen and a few other jobs like that and he didn't make any money at all, lol.

Did you mow your lawn? Say you were a self employed landscaper. Put a spin on what you did, just make sure you say you were self employed in some way and you aren't happy with it anymore.

My husband has now been working solidly for over a year and things are fine. Personally I think that it's a real shame that people who spend the time to care for their children don't get the respect they deserve.

It's true, BUT what always matters is your experience. Let's say you resigned to you last job and went straight to take care of the kids. You can put in resume that you did some work from home. BS your way out. Examples, real estate, bill collector, accountant, counselor, web-designer, etc. Just make it look like you were doing something and not watching TV and changing diapers. I went thru the same. I stayed 1 year at home and I told my new employer that I was doing webpages for local companies. Good Luck.
