I was always taught that the whole "point" was to become as much like god-as possible and those who were the "best of the best" would become gods in their own right and would create their own eternal children and rule over their domain. I was also taught that the male god would have more than one wife because there are more righteous women than men so there would be more women who needed a husband as a goddess. Also food for thought is that Mormons believe that god once was just like us in some other dimension, working on becoming god-like and achieving that goal.

There are a lot of odd things that come out about Mormonism if you read the original documents and not the stuff that has passed by the "spin doctors".
They teach that you can get your own planet to a minority of the church who have a temple recommend and have done a bunch of stuff in their temple.

The idea that Mormons will inherit their own planet comes from a warped version of our beliefs of the after-life. We believe that if we have proven faithful and trust-worthy in this life that we will be able to progress eternally in heaven. For most people, this belief would logically lead to eventually being able to organize worlds (even more than one) like God has done. I believe that this is true. But that is only my understanding.

1 Corinthians 8:16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

2 Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

Galatians 4:7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

The description from your friend is sort-of accurate. See link below.

There are lots of strange things told about "Mormons," especially here. Most are totally false. Listen to members, they know what they believe.

We believe that after this life everyone will continue to progress and learn. Those who have accepted the fullness of God's truth will progress to become more and more like God is now. We do not necessarily believe that we will become equal with God. And I do not know for sure if it has been taught that some people will inherit their own planet, but we do believe that our families will be with us after we die, if we are sealed to them in the temple through God's priesthood and that we will continue to learn and progress after .

Gratefully we had modern revelation (just as the Children of Israel did :) )

Mormons believe God is our father....

I suspect your Father wants you to be as happy as possible and to have everything possible?

Puppies have the potential to grow up to be like their parents. As do human babies.

Is it that big of a stretch to think that we have the potential to grow up and be like our Father???

For many people this is a strange doctrine, however we believe that it comes from God and not from Man (just as the 10 commandments did).

We believe that God still speaks to his children on earth through a Prophet.

We believe that any one who seeks knowledge can pray to God and he will reveal his truth to them.

It would be odd for God to put a couple on a planet and give them dominion over it and expect them to populate it. It would be very odd and very Biblical.
