I'll have to watch it again - but yeah, i think it is wax - or an oil of some type.

I shared a house with a chinese girl once and she had the longest most beautiful hair imaginable - she would comb olive oil through it regularly - then wash it clean. It didn't straighten it - was more like a conditioning / beauty treatment.

In the movie, geishas were shown using oil to condition their hair. It was camellia oil.

Camellia oil is still used in Japan by women to condition their hair & add luster. I read about this oil & tried it on my hair and nails.

I've seen it sold online & in Japanese specialty stores in the SF Bay Area.

"Camellia seed oil is high in oleic acid. It has been used in Japan for centuries to moisturize and condition the skin, hair and nails. Camellia oil is a nourishing addition to creams for dry, damaged skin, hair conditioners, scalp treatments, eye creams and after sun skin care products. It can be used in any proportion. Camellia oil is similar in color and viscosity to jojoba. It penetrates quickly and can be used alone on the skin, hair and nails. It is an exceptional oil for skin care formulations and soaps. Camellia seed oil can be used as a carrier oil for aromatherapy treatments." http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com/soap/product.asp?product_id=oilcamellia
