Why do people laugh when someone farts?

There was actually a study a while ago about why certain things are considered funny. Generally, if something unexpected happens, it evokes feelings of humour in people. Since farting is usually out of the blue, it falls under that category. (Even if someone announces beforehand that they're going to fart, the announcement causes the same response.)
