On a Dell Laptop, we have had a recurring problem with the Normal.dot template on Word. This problem exists in Word 2000, XP, 2003, and now 2007. The Word Normal template changes to remove the top and bottom margins, starting all lines at the very top edge of the page, and ending at the bottom edge. The vertical ruler is there, but you cannot adjust the margins on it. Even adjusting the margins in the menu won't change it. The reason for this is that the margins haven't really changed, it prints normally. It only appears on the screen messed up. This causes pagination problems, as it adjusts for the margins when you print. I have tried deleting the normal.dot template, but it re-creates it the wrong way. I have tried copying the normal.dot template from several other computers, but it still opens it the wrong way. The only thing that has worked in the past has been to back everything up and run a full restore. I would like to skip this drastic step, suggestions?

No virus, and I have also tried using a normal.dot from another computer and write protecting it first. No luck.

Try clicking on the line between the pages. This should expand out to the gap, the headers and footers, and the top margin.

Good luck.

Just delete it. Word will create a new one when you restart the app.

It's quite possible you have a virus that's infecting the document template. You may want to write-protect it (set it to read-only)
