There is a definite link to various asbestos related diseases including;
- mesothelioma
- lung cancer
- Asbestosis
- Asbestos-related pleural diseases
This is not a possibility but a definite fact that if you are exposed to breathing in the fine asbestos particles you have a very high probability of developing one of the above asbestos related diseases.
So much so that one of the major producers and suppliers of asbestos products in Aus. (James Hardie) has had a successful law suite against them and are obliged to pay many billions of dollars to current and future victims of there products for upto 40 years!

Inhalation of asbestos fibers has been proven to cause lung cancer. The connection between asbestos exposure and lung cancer was noted as early as 1925, and confirmed by many epidemiologic studies of asbestos-exposed workers over the next 70 years. All four main types of commercially used asbestos, chrysotile, amosite, anthophyllite, and mixtures containing crocidolite, are associated with an increased risk of lung cancer

Asbestos exposure increases the risk that someone might develop mesothelioma. However, not everyone exposed to asbestos gets mesothelioma and not everyone who gets mesoethelioma was exposed to asbestos (particularly children). The risk is over 80 percent that those workers exposed to asbestos may get mesothelioma, so the risk is very high.

Yes, it can. It's suspected that fiberglass may have similar effects as well.

Always wear a mask when working with any such material. Increased risk is associated with greater exposure, but that's just a statistical measure of your chances and you can get it just as easily from your first exposure as from your 100,000th. If you do get lung cancer from exposure, having it result from a lower level of exposure isn't going to make the cancer any less bad.
