Hi
There are alot of things you can do. You should though learn how to give fluids from the vet. here is some info

Treatment of Chronic Renal Failure

If your cat is not in final stages, this is not want you want to do. You do Not want to feed the vets low protein diet
There are new thoughts on this and the thinking is it is not the amount of protein but the quality of protein that matters.
The Merck veterinary manual [www.merckvetmanual.com] says that cats need "4 g of protein of high biologic value per kg body wt/day". That's about 7 calories from protein per pound body weight per day. If a cat isn't a good eater and consumes, say, 20 calories per pound per day, then 7/20 = 35% of calories can safely be from protein. It must be high quality protein, which means meat, fish, milk, and eggs, and not grain or soy.

I am under the assumption that you have been feeding mostly dry foods. Many use a vegetable based protein instead of animal and that is part of the problem.. Your cat needs protein as it is a carnivore and cutting down on it will lead to other health issues and may cause faster degeneration.
You want to cut down on fat and phosphorous (no fish allowed now) The best way to do this is with a raw diet which you can make yourself or buy . (making yourself is better) link provided at the bottom
If you are unwilling to do that then something like the non fish flavors of Wellness or merrick with NO grains are good alternatives.
You also will want to look into phosphorous binders. Something like aluminum hydroxide

You also either want to talk to the vet about having injectable pepcid ac on hand or you can buy it in pill form (ac not plain pepcid) and give 1/4 tab for stomach upset which happens alot in crf cats due to acid in the stomach.
I hope this stuff helps, here are many links for you

Diabetes is a very hard thing to deal with, without drugs or proper treatment, just try and make sure your cat is kept well fed and watered brush it more than usual hold it in your arms and whisper ever so quietly ,
Now i will suggest you understand that the Cat is at the end or its healthy world, if you fail to get treatment it will not do well Blindness and liver failure is or can be expected if your not careful, Diabetes treatments can be a lot less if you find a health store that will give you some suggestions, i hope your kitten stays well but truly keeping it away from a vet isn't the best way to handle it. just give it a thought,
Three years ago i had to put my princess down she had the same problem, i promised myself if she ever was in pain i would have no problem in taking care of it, i held her in my arms and the doctor gave her a shot, and it was all over, i cried for a week, but always remembered the wonder full times we had when she was my baby. good luck i hope your pet gets better.

It sounds as if your cat has chronic renal failure which is the decline of the kidneys over months to years.
Kidneys are the Achilles heel of the cat.

You need to restrict protein, phosphorus and sodium from their diet
Allow constant access to water
Give omega fatty acid supplements
Subcutaneous fluids are a great way to add additional nutrients. Your veterinary technician can show you how it is done. Is not too technically challenging ..
At this time you'll need to watch for any changes in thirst or appetite. Weighing the cat daily will allow you to care better for the cat. It will cue you to offer more food and fluids if the cat loses weight.
Get the cats blood level tested as directed by your vet as it is a great way to asses kidney function.

The prognosis is poor long term because the disease inevitably progresses. Keep your cat happy and comfortable.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Kidneys are some of the first organs to go in cats, and your cat is at an older age. Ask your vet if the KD food would be appropriate. They can give fluids, but it gets expensive.

Unfortunately, no. Cats kidneys are usually the first thing to go as they age . My vet shows people how to give fluids at home and we usually put the cat on a special cat food. Some cats do fairly well with this treatment.I am sorry your cat is ill.
Hopefully you can treat your cat at home to make him more comfortable.Good Luck.

Ask your vet about fluid treatment..my cat had kidney failure and it added about a year onto his life. Why would the vet tell you nothing can be done...this is not true.

If its been going on for more than a couple of days I really think you need to take the poor old thing to the vets it might be something minor but you should get it checked out anyway. Hope it feels better soon.
