I understand your discomfort with the idea of using a psychologist or prescription medication. But if she had diabetes, wouldn't you have her pancreas treated?

The brain is just another organ in our bodies. Standard care is therapy and anti-anxiety medication (only if needed). True anxiety can only be managed, not cured. Guess how kids manage anxiety on their own? Yep, drugs and alcohol.

Think about your choices and go with your gut parental feelings. Meditation and relaxation are always helpful but they must be focused in order to be effective. Find out what her calming focus is and have her use it.

Worst case scenario, she is repressing something and needs a positive outlet. I recommend actively participating in some sort of non-contact sport like running track. She doesn't have to be the best runner to make the team.

Good luck!!

As a parent, you can't just sit there and let her suffer. I am 17 years old... I suffered anxiety disorder for many years until my mom got me into some counseling and on some medication called Zoloft. It helped a lot. Why wouldn't you want her to go see a counselor? It helped me out a ton. They work you through it and show you some techniques to calm yourself down. Now I no longer have to suffer. Feel free to email me with any questions.

Anxiety disorders respond well to therapy. A therapist could teach your daughter how to avoid an attack by meditation, or any of a dozen different methods. As a parent you can get her help.

if you think that your daughter has anxiety you want to look for these symptoms; complaints of chest pain or heart palpitations, constant worry, feelings of impending doom, lack of sleep, feeling like she has a hard time breathing, not wanting to go into social situations, irritability, these are some of the symptoms of anxiety that she could have. she may not have all of them to have anxiety. if you feel as though she is having a severe anxiety attack or panic attack, get her some ice water and have her drink that then have her blow all the old air out of her lungs through her nose and then inhale through her nose and hold it for 3 seconds and exhale through her mouth. continue this until she has calmed down. i am not sure how old your daughter is, but i have anxiety and i take effexor for it and it has done wonders for me, now it is not recomended for children under the age of 18. if she is young i would have her go to a therapist and get to the bottom of her stress and anxiety. that is where i learned my breathing exercises. hope that this helps and good luck

Read up as much as you can on anxiety and treatments for it. There should be books available at the bookstore or library.
