I have two dogs and a trainer told me that when they are agressive toward you, shove them to the ground to show that you're dominant. I have two dogs and this works well with them. However, I have a cat as well. She's a very sweet cat and she never acts agressive toward me...but today she did something strange. I was holding her, and she started hissing and clawing at me! I put her down and my sweet little husky came over to see what was wrong, and she started clawing and hissing at her too! She even ripped out a good bit of the poor thing's fur!
My cat has never done this before (toward the dogs, yes, but not to me!) so when she did it to me, I didn't know what to do!

Don't use dog training on a cat, they're two different animals and it doesn't work.

Try to figure out what the trigger was that set her off. Did she get anxious about something in the environment (a sound or a visual of something) that scared her suddenly and she felt trapped by you holding her? It may be hardly anything you'd be able to tell--a cat can startle at something very quickly and react. Ours all get upset at the midnight alarm of the broadcasting station on tv when they start beeping that. They also run out of the room when the hissing street cleaner comes by at night. And two of them growl and leave if they hear a car door bang shut.

Your cat was afraid and warned you and the dog to stay back from her to give her space, nothing more. Disciplining her for that isn't fair. She didn't know where the danger was, but needed to be out of your hands and have some personal space that wasn't being entered, till she could figure out if the danger was real or not. Don't yell at her, just let her have the space. She was right up front about what she needed so that isn't something to punish for.

They say when you are aggressive towards cats they hold a grudge and feel unloved. Did you act mean to her to cause her to be aggressive to you. My cat hisses at me on occasions like when I'm grooming or cutting her nails. She just doesn't like to be bothered. Maybe she isn't feeling very well and you should have the vet look at her. Don't be dominant with the cat it will have a negative effect. You have to do like you would a child and make your point known and forgive an forget. They understand more then we know. Tell her she is wrong with a firm voice and let her know she did wrong but then let her know it is ok.

my cats are obedient but I am home all the time, so I am able to follow through with the spray bottle of water and I do it everytime they are doing what they shouldn't after a while they stop just by my touching the bottle.

if this cat was sweet before check him/her for wounds where you touched her, might be an infected puncture wound hard to see but painful to kitty.

Your cat could be sick or sore for some reason. If it is a normally friendly cat, this could be a good explanation. I have disciplined cats with a water bottle. Cats hate water, so if I catch them on the furniture or kitchen table, I will squirt them. It is more humane that hitting, spanking or whatever.

Something must've startled the cat, whether it's a sight, noise or smell.
In disciplining a cat, there's not much you can do, but say "no, no" firmly and leave it at that.
It was an isolated incident.
Especially when your cat is usually docile.

She was probably trying to tell you that she wanted to be let down, but you didn't pick up on the subtle clues so she resorted to hissing and scratching. I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again. If it happens again soon, she may be sick and it's making her cranky.

maybe your cat is injured or sick or in heat because sweet cats don't do that. that does not sound normal. call the vet.

for little things squirt your cat in the face with a spray bottle, but mostly u cant train cats unless there r consequences, they do not live to please like dogs

If she does it again spray her with a spray bottle with water in it, cats hate water! She'll learn that scratching is bad!

well i don't care what anyone one thinks but i give my kitty a lil' spank, yup that's right, right on his thigh and i put him in time out. just like a lil' kid. he listens to me when i tell him in a certain voice "PT you better behave" or he just puts himself in his room. But your cat may have been scared of something, or noticed something and you or the dog scared her, I'm sure she was sorry. its just like when you accidentally step on a your pet's tail. you don't mean to do it even though it hurts them real bad. they forgive you and all is well.
