This weekend I plan on getting my first Tattoo and I want as much information as possible before getting one. I know I have to make sure I want what I want and I know it hurts, and everyone that I've asked said they couldn't describe it.

I plan on getting it on my shoulder going almost to my elbow. But I hear it's least painful on the arm.

This question gets asked a zillion times on here but what makes yours interesting is that you asked if people exaggerate - yes they do - both ways though.
Some go on and on about how much it hurts, but then some say it just doesn't hurt at all. It reminds of what it was like after having a baby - as soon as it's over you forget what it was really like, love having it so much you are willing to go through it again. Somehow everything seems rosier afterwards.....
Everyone's experience is different - every part of the body is different. No one can tell you what to expect really, but you'll be fine and once it's over, all will be forgotten.

Ive had both my calf muscles tattooed and I found them uncomfortable well just the outline. I also have my lower inside left arm done and I found it was fine, only got a bit sorer nearer to the bend in my arm. I think most people to over exagerate. It really all depends on where you get a tattoo and what your pain threshold is like.

They don't really hurt. The outline is the only part that kinda hurts, its more annoying then anything. I think what really gets to me is the buzzing of the tattoo needle. I can barely feel the color/fill. I think it all depends on each person. I watched my ex get all of hit tattoos and he never even blinked. He has one on each arm where you are getting yours.
I don't think all people exagerate, I think for a lot of people they really do hurt. But for most, they feeling is just annoying.

of course it hurts, however how much it hurts depends on your tolerence of pain. i'm not the bravest person around but even i can get a tattoo, in fact i've gotten several of them. i find the outline is the worst of it and thats not all that bad, and i found my left calf tat was more uncomfortable than my right calf tat~don't know why!
if it helps you at all, keep in mind that the artist only works for seconds at a time, before he has to stop and wipe the area he is working on. so it could be as long as ten-twelve seconds or as short as four-five seconds before he stops.
you can stand a bit of discomfort for that long - go for it - you won't regret it!

everybody is different and experiences pain differently. i think tattoos hurt but each place i have had tattooed has hurt in a different way and to a different degree. i have never had a tattoo be unbearable but there have been moments where it was very close to unbearable but that pain usually only lasts for a few seconds. the spine is a killer.
to me it feels like a cat scratch, an intense stinging sensation that lasts for the duration of the tattoo and usually intensifies with time.

I honestly think that people exaggerate. I just got my first tattoo on monday and I almost chickened out but my bro said that nooo it doesn't hurt that bad only in certain spots so I ended up getting it. I got it on my lower stomach, almost my hips but not quite ((2 stars)) and it didn't hurt that bad. The out line felt like someone with a really sharp nail just continually scratching in your skin ((not like a million needs poking you)) and then when he filled it in it felt like someone was rubbing my skin, like the friction which makes it kinda burns a bit. it's not that bad but it really depends on what, where, and how your tolerance to pain is. GOOD LUCK! :)

The first time I got my tattoo done I was 17 years old and it honestly didn't hurt at all. It felt like someone slapping me with rubber bands over and over. When I got it touched up at about 24 years old it hurt like HELL. If felt like someone carving with an exacto knife over and over. Not sure what the difference was. Good luck! I hope you experience the no pain one. Where are you thinking of getting it? Mine is on my right leg.

It depends on alot of things, where the tattoo is, how high your pain threshold is. I got one on my foot which was excruciating, but the tattoo artist was nice enuf to stop for 5Min's (while i vomited).
The main point is,the pain wont last long and its totally worth it.

depends how high your threshold to pain is and where the particular tattoo is being placed. give it a test run and if it hurt terribly for you, the artist should be willing to stop without giving you a hard time. ♥
