at a dept, store for a $100 would you keep it, leave it, return it back to the register or what. If you kept it, is it o.k., because you found it, right?

If you returned it back the company would be getting another $100 to themselves making the purchase $200. So think about it.

It's okay to keep a lost item if you've made every reasonable effort to find the real owner.

In this case, the gift card does not belong to the store; it belongs to whoever purchased it. You can hand the clerk the receipt and ask if they can trace the owner by their credit card info (the store keeps a record of this) - if this is possible you should surrender the card to the store so they can return it to the owner.
If the purchaser paid cash, then there is no way to trace them, and the card is truly lost. Therefore you are ethically free to claim it.

Return it to the store's office, not a clerk (because they're not always that honest). If you try to use it, the owner may have already warned the store. Despite you having the receipt, they can present a receipt from they're bank account. Then you'll look like a thieve. It's not worth it, it never is. You'll feel better about yourself when you do the right thing.

Vey good question. Well, i would look on the recepit to see if the gift card was bought with a check , credit or debit card. IF so, the store could track who bought it and I would know that it could get back to the person who purchased it.

As much as i would want to keep it I believe in karma and I have a really good track record with those things.

If I knew who lost it I would 100% definately give it back to it's owner..........

If I had no way of knowing or finding out..............
I guess it would be my lucky day!!!

Unfortunately I would have to question the chance of the store clerk trying to find the owner through a credit card receipt and returning the card.....I think many of them...with the store card and receipt, would keep it for themselves............just put it in their pocket.........very easy........so if I was going to go this route, I might make sure that I watched while they tried to find the owner...........

If the receipt is still attached the store can check their computer and find out who purchased it (if the purchase was made with a credit card or check.) I would return it because all efforts should be made to restore it to its owner. To me, it would feel like stealing.

regardless of who paid for it or lost it, it isn't yours because you didn't buy it, earn it, or receive it. You simply found it. If the card was purchased with cash (not very common for that amount) consider donating it to an organization that will distribute it to a needy person. If you do decide to keep it, consider the karma aspect, you may be the one who loses $100 next.

Turn it in at Customer Service so that the person who lost it can find it again.

Most stores will place the Gift Card on hold for a week and if it remains unclaimed then usually it is given to the person who finds it. Not at all stores, but it is the honest thing to do.

if the receipt IDENTIFIED the original buyer, I would attempt to get in touch with them through the store's customer service department. I would hold onto the card and NOT give it to the store clerk because the clerk might just keep it and never call the buyer.

I would look around to see if anyone was looking for something. If I saw someone like that I would approach them & ask if they had lost somthing. It is unfortunate that they lost it. But if I tryed my best to find the owner & could not I would keep it. Unfortunatly if you turn it in 9 out of 10 chances whoever you handed it to would keep it for there selves.

I would keep it. Returning it to the company would be stupid. They have no way of tracking it back to the person who purchased it.
