I am really quite frankly exhausted trying to understand the mentality of a believer. Odd, considering I used to be one. And I really would like to understand. It is genuine. I am not here to judge. Just to learn.
Just want to say thank you to all of the atheists here that have helped me down my own path of unraveling the fairy tales over the last few months. Can we all just get together and have a drink or two?

it's not hard to understand, think about when you were little and santa clause shows would come on, and you got to learn about the guy who brings you all those swell presents...it felt good, i understand why some people never want to give up that feeling..its essentially the same...

You should not exhaust yourself with these matters. I used to exhaust myself with the mentality of those that have a need to prove themselves to society. But it's their choice. And you only have so much energy. Don't waste it on trying to understand others. Be happy with your own understanding of the world.
As to breathing a sigh of relief when walking into a room full of atheist ... never had the experience. I might be a believer but I have this inherent need to avoid places where people of the same conviction congregate. Whatever they believe.

Never walked into a room of atheists as far as I know. Still, congrats on completing the path. It's a thorn in the side of all those who bleat "If you're no longer a Christian, you never were one in the first place!"
Physically I live about 4,000 miles away from you but I'd have a drink with you any time otherwise. Cheers.

I don't necessarily breathe a sigh of relief, but it certainly doesn't bother me in any way, either. I'm a Christian. I attend some of our regional atheist meetings, and am friends with quite a few of the regulars. I've been invited to address them on several occasions. It's interesting to me to learn people's reasons for believing as they do (which includes not believing anything at all).

Given that walking into a room of christians (I'm a christian) can occasionally be really uncomfortable, I doubt that that one defining characteristic is enough to make you comfortable or click with others--it's usually for me a mix of personality, humor, and on a real basic level whether the room full of "you name the group" is a bunch of tools or not.
But frankly if it makes you comfortable and happy great.

I've never walked into a room full of athiests, but I would imagine it might be a little uncomfortable since I don't believe like they do. That being said, I'm sure we could find plenty to talk about. There are more things to talk about than just our beliefs.

Does it have to be all of us? I was hoping for a one on one session with ya!! ;)
Well, besides thanking all my fellow atheists that have assisted in helping me maintain my sanity on here at times, Id also like to give a shout out to many of the friendly, intelligent and thoughtful religionists that I have also come to know, respect and better understand...

How can you tell when you walk into a room full of atheists? Toss a baby out on the floor and see if they sacrifice it?
lol...I can say I feel much more comfortable when I'm around people who aren't religious psychopaths. I mean, even when those people are "nice," they're only buttering you up so that they can bore you to death about Jesus.

I get curious, because I begin to truly wonder what the terrific emptiness must actually feel like. I've been Christian my whole life, so encountering a room full of atheists would be like landing in an ocean of jello. I understand why atheists do what they do, but I also see why truth is more interesting than ignorance. Believing in an absence of something greater is somewhat like believing 2+2=5, wouldn't you say?

Meetup.com has saved my sanity more than once, living here in Mississippi. The Great Southern Humanist Society is a wonderful group and we do just what you like.

I m a christian and that i think of your exceptionally intelligent for having such powerful doubts. the genuine christians did have such large doubts. And truthfully i dont think of you'll be a real christian without going threw the lions den interior the 1st place. You wont be left in the back of for being an athiest actually it says or jesus for sure says that in case you dont know any further ideal you will bypass to heaven and be held larger than people who think of they do know extra ideal. Your going to be extra advantageous than those human beings who attempt our toughest to be with god when you consider which you want the reality and dont settle for in spite of your taught or advised. fact is the only thank you to god. fact is Jesus. Get this. God made atoms and cells brother, do you think of this style of god wouldnt make some stupid length of information out of all religions just to **** with us? This god, male or lady or in spite of this god is, this god did fool with us threw religions of all types. Even yours. stay sturdy on your ideals, in spite of you have faith, the genuine god has it coated for you. It wouldnt basically make us for kindling in some hearth that doesnt want any gasoline. i like jesus bro I comprehend why god might make a fool of itself just to coach us all to be the assholes that we are. Take care guy sooner or later we can be on yet another planet having a dejavue over this little information superhighway verbal substitute and you will smile and that i will snigger yet we can the two be buddies.
