Should I put the cover letter in the body of the e-mail or should I attach it as I would my resume. The situation is that my local unemployment office referred me to a job and the contact method is via e-mail only.

As a recruiter, I would prefer to see the cover letter as an attachment. One huge reason is for formatting - it gets lost in the body of an email. However, don't simply repeat what is in your cover letter in the email. The email can be short and sweet and you can let the rest of your materials do the talking for you.

Ive seen it done both ways, but have usually received the cover letter in the body of the email with the resume as an attachment.
