I assume by 1 day that is a day ashore from a cruise and will be something on the order of 9 to 10 hours. Civitavecchia itself doesn't have a lot to see or do. given that you're looking for something other than Rome, I would recommend going to Tarquina which is just north of Civitavecchia. The Etruscan tombs are absolutely worth a visit:

Tarquina has Etruscan, Greek, and Roman roots and the museums reflect their heritage. There's an interesting ceramics museum in the Palazzo dei Priori.

If you like ruins I don't think Ostia Antica is too far a way from Civitavecchia.

if you've been there 1 day, there's no way you've done everything!! We were there for 3 1/2 days and didn't nearly see everything. Go see St Pauls Bacillica outside the old city walls, go to the borghase galerey, best museum in the city!! Shop, take a day trip to Pompeii...there is pleanty to do, by a book and start checking them off
