My brother received an invitation to a wedding. He is not dating anyone right now and is wondering if he can bring one of his buddies along as the "and guest" . He is not gay( not that there is anything wrong with that.) He just wants to bring a buddy with him. I know the answer. Just looking for some back up here.

It means a significant other. If it is ok with the bride and groom (both! ok let's just say the bride) to bring a friend that's one thing, but to just bring along a buddy is strange.

And guest assumes someone close. Not just some buddy who doesn't even know the bridge and groom. Considering the cost of weddings these days, I would not just bring a friend along for company.

I think that's inappropriate. The "and guest" is meant for whomever the person is dating at the time. I think bringing a buddy to a wedding is inappropriate--if the bride and groom wanted him there they would have invited him.
If he was dating you, that'd be different. I'm gay and I've brought my partner to many weddings and people have been very respectful.

He can bring anyone he wants as long as that person will behave themselves. "And guest" indicates any companion who is not an acquaintance of the bride or groom and they are usually included in the invitation so that the guest will have someone familiar to sit with.

The wedding party is ensuring that everyone has a companion or ''guest'. If it is not specified, you may bring anyone you wish as a guest or companion. In this day and age, 'gay' or not appears to be irrelevant in most social situations.

If the invitation said and guest and not and spouse then it doesn't matter if his guest is male or female as long as they know the dress code, what is expected as a guest and isn't the brides ex or something. Have fun!

Yes, he can bring a guest. Male or female, whoever. At least he knew to look for the "and Guest". A lot of people do not know about that piece of proper ettiquette.

That is fine he can bring you his mom or anyone. Just not someone the bride or groom are having a fight with. The and guest does not mean a date just bring someoneone so you are not alone

Guest doesn't necessary mean a significant other/partner. It's just that, someone else to keep you company. Specially when you are attending a wedding where you know no one other than the bride/groom.

"and guest" doesn't specifically mean a significant other. If your brother is that concerned about if his friend is OK to bring along, he should check with the bride or groom. Chances are though, it will be fine with them.
