He could kill people. Remember David cut off Goliath's head and held it up for all to see. God loves blood, that's why he wants all that animal sacrifice and sprinkling of blood.

Samuel was disobedient to God and and God told him that he would seek out a man after His own heart. David was a man after God's own heart. As we know from the David and Goliath telling, David was not strong, or tall or anything that would distinguish him physically, but it was all bout his faith and trust in the Lord and his Love for the Lord. Now if you know David's story, you know that he wasn't always the epitome of a Godly man and he did make many grievous mistakes, but he was chastised and did repent and God restored him. This serves to encourage those of us who seek to follow the Lord to know that we will never be perfect and even those who earnestly seek after the Lord can make mistakes, however we need to continuously repent and seek to serve and love Him better each day, So basically it's not the outer that God looks at it's the inward.

Because God looks at the heart of man and not on the outside. David had a heart for God and lived for him, he may have been small and somewhat insignificant compared to his brothers, but in the eyes of God David had the qualities of a good servent for him. 1 Samual 16:7 says this: "...God does not see the same way peopel see. People look at the ouside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart" (NCV)

The Bible says David was a man after G-d's own heart, so I would have to say that G-d saw David's heart was right before him, so G-d took pleasure in him and made him King over Israel.

The Old Testament describes David as "one after God's own heart".
David was a simple herder of sheep and when God called him to slay Goliath, he had no fear because of his faith.
What God saw in him had everything to do with David's faith in God and his willingness to obey God and only do the will of God.
So it is said in the Bible. If you remember, later in his life David committed adultery with Bathsheba and fell out of favor with God.
