I may be going to New Zealand to work there next summer. Depending on how much money I've got when I'm done with my internship, I would like to spend some time traveling around. But I don't want to be rushed in leaving because of my plane ticket back. Is there any kind of system where I can buy a ticket in advance that will enable me to leave on any day that I so desire, instead of a designated day? Serious answers only please!

Not only that but "guaranteed seating" is a thing of the past. If you buy a ticket that is good, say from October 1st to November 1st, you still have to have yourself "listed" on the flight a day ahead, then be at the airport in plenty of time to be ready at the gate...2 hours ahead at the airport at least and 1 hour ahead at the gate. Then you need to check in.

Here is the reason...Let's say 150 people buy an open ticket to the same destination as yours, with the same airline. The airline can't hold seats open "in case" you show up or the airline goes broke. Even IF you list yourself on a "confirmed/reserved seat" the night before a flight...you can show up 20 min before departure and be told that there are no seats left. Why? Because when you don't indicate your intention to travel on a given flight by checking in at least an hour or two in advance of departure, they assume you aren't coming and sell your seat.

So, an open ticket may help you but it also helps the airline because if you aren't there, the seat goes to someone else.
Play that game too long and you go past the date that your ticket is good and then it's bye-bye air fare.

I suggest that you talk to a travel agent and get information on types of tickets in advance because *each airline has its own rules* with regards to confirmed seating, listing and checking in times. Some actually state on the ticket that if you don't show up 2 hours ahead of departure, your seat is gone. The travel agent will be able to tell you all of this, plus the best options for what you need.

Yes - you can buy a Round the World Ticket which is valid for an extended period of time. It is required that you have the departure date set but you can book the other flights as you go - including your return flight. Your only restriction is that you will not be able to stay longer than your visa allows and no longer than the date that the ticket allows. Contact me and I can help you with this.

Formerly known as 'open ticket' but go ahead an plan a return date, then if you have to change the date pay the change fee. Call the airlines for the different options out there.

I'm not afraid at all in face I'm addicted to it. you shouldn't be afraid of flying because modern aircraft are controlled by computers. they are so advanced that after takeoff, they can almost fly by themselves.

SOMETIMES YOU CAN BUY AN "OPEN TICKET" BUT YOU WILL STILL HAVE TO MAKE FLIGHT RESERVATIONS...
