Why doesn't the U S Government just put up fences and motion sensors around the USA and then incarcerate all of us? Wouldn't it be cheaper, faster and much more efficient?

This is an extremist attitude. Britain is far worse than we regarding monitoring it's population. I would not be more efficient. The hand will still be quicker than the eye. As new ways to catch crooks come up, so do new ways to be crooked.

They're already doing it. 4 million people are already incarcerated in this country, a large percentage for nonviolent crimes.

Anyone that thinks "I never do anything wrong so why should I care" is deluding themselves and dooming our society to an Orwellian nightmare in the future.

The user that responded that the Dems would make this worse -- you've got to be kidding right? The civil liberties of this country have been more devastated in the last 7 years of Republican "rule" than in any previous time. Adding in the appointment of truly activist judges on the Supreme Court and we're looking at a very dark future for our country's freedoms.

Being a senior citizen, I have seen the progression of laws that criminalize more and more activities over my lifetime . .

Behaviors and actions that were commonplace and acceptable have become misdemeanors and even felonies because of the repressive nature of many laws, while protection of individual rights have been eroded by other legislations . . .

Rather than to put the onus of nefarious activities on those individuals who prey on society, our legislators prefer to take the easy way out and broaden the categories of what is criminal behavior . . .

I lived most of my life in New York City and as a simple example of that progression of law I can tell you about the "gun" laws there . .
When I was young (50+ years ago), it was legal to keep firearms in one's home, including pistols, for personal protection . . . The "Sullivan Law," which is still the toughest one on the books, barred carrying a concealed weapon without special permit and covered all gun offenses outside and on the streets . . . While in high school, we used to carry our cased rifles on the subway to compete with other rifle teams around the city and students could receive firearms training in the schools for competitive events . . . There are no longer any high school rifle teams in NYC !

Today, it is illegal to own a pistol without special permit and it is illegal to own or possess a rifle or shotgun without special registration and payment of annual fees and God help you if you attempted to transport a firearm on public transportation . . . . If one uses a firearm to protect ones life and property in one's home, in New York City, it is deemed a felony and one would be charged as a felon . . . There are numerous individuals who have been incarcerated in New York prisons for using firearms to protect themselves and their families . . .

It is still a simple task to purchase a firearm on the streets of NYC and the criminal elements are still well armed and dangerous . . . The reductions in crime that were accomplished during the Giuliani administration were the result of his increasing the jail facilities and locking the criminals up instead of letting them walk free after being arrested because there weren't enough jail cells to keep them in , , , They used to give arrested criminals "Desk Appearance Tickets" by prior administrations and 'hope' that they'd show up for their trial dates . . .

Now the State of New York has a senator, Charles Schumer, who is obsessed with gun laws and new restrictions . . . 'Chucky' Schumer wants to spread his sick ideals through the federal law books and effectively to criminalize the rest of the population . . . His proteges, Hillary Clinton and congressman Anthony Weiner (and others) are allies in his quest . .

In short, your concerns are valid and unfortunately, my generation is leaving you a more restricted life for the future . . . Good Luck !

Gee - paranoid much??

Everyone will be a criminal only if everyone breaks the law... and this is also going to depend on the level of enforcement.
