....And if it is a spider bite, how do I get rid of it? The area on my leg, looks like a huge mosquito bite, except I have had it for a few weeks now. It has not gotten any bigger, but is red, hard, and swollen.

The area also itches if I touch it, but does not itch the way a mosquito bite does.

I suggest you go to the doctor to be safe. Different spiders have different kind of venoms. The fact that it hasn't gotten bigger is a good sign, as a brown recluse would progressively get worse week by week. Some spiders will cause you to get really sick really fast, and it will be over in a couple days. It might not be a spider at all.
Not knowing what bit you will be a hindrance, but they should still be able to help you.

You don't say where you live. In the US, there are two types of venomous spiders. The widows (lactrodectus) and the recluses ((Loxosceles).

Had you been bitten by a widow, you would have had severe immediate pain, followed by muscle rigidity, tightness in the chest, headache, heart palpitations, sweating, all the symptoms of the neurotoxins which the widows possess.

Had you been bitten by a recluse, you would have had moderate immediate pain, and over time the flesh would have died and sloughed off leaving you with a large and growing open ulcer.

In fact, many spider bites are reported in the US each year and an exceedingly small number are actually spider bites.

Both of these species are shy and avoid contact, biting only when threatened.

However, I have had wasp stings that behaved in the same manner and for a similar length of time as you describe. One was from a Giant European Wasp the flew in the sun roof of my car and became trapped between me and the seat. He stung me on the back, and it hurt all the way through to my chest. It took weeks to go away and itched for a good two weeks.

An infection of some sort is also extremely likely.

If I were you, I would have it checked out by a doctor, but I greatly doubt you were bitten by a spider.

Be grateful you don't live in Australia, where they have many species of spider that will kill you in hours if not treated!

Where do you live? If you live in the Southeast its most likely to be either a wolf spider or a recluse if it doesn t get bigger it means it hasn t gotten to your heart or hasn t gone past your leg so if it is a recluse bite its ok as long as it doesn t get bigger I would recommend to see a doctor as soon as you can he can identify the bite!
He will give you a certain ointment and he will tell you to put it on once or twice a Day/Week for about a month then the spider bite should start to get better if it doesn t go back to the doctor ASAP!!!

Can you guess how many people call to our clinic saying they need to be seen for a spider bite and when they get here it's a staph infection? Just about every one of them. Go to the doctor, you can't tell how deep the infection is until they clean it out if it is staph. You don't want it to get any deeper either if it is.

You need to go to the doctor, for a hard lump like that. If it is a spider bite you need antibiotics for the infection.

It is a spider bit and it will not go away until the core is removed and it is treated with antibiotics. The core is the string of poison that the spider injects into you. If it is not treated with antibiotics the poison will get into your system and then it is very hard to get ride of.(I know from experience)

It's a spider bite. Just don't itch it and put ointment on it and you'll live through it. =)
