Certain areas of the throat and neck are vulnerable, others are not. If you're going for a quick, straight shot to the trachea, it's probably not going to bring him down (but it will get him to loosen up, let go of you, stun him, etc., and this is an opportunity). Grabbing the trachea as if you were going to rip it out is something else. Also, In the same way that you apply a blood choke to the carotid arteries, an accurate strike to the side of the neck can produce a good stunning effect as well. As for knocking someone out with a strike to the back or side of the neck, I don't know, because I've never done it. The point is, striking vital areas is all about precision, not muscle.

the people who are talking about it... have never tried it. The human body is much much more durable than that or than they would have you believe. the throat is a very important part of the body, there are many many vital things running through that area, as such it is actually very strong and very well defended. it takes an enormous amount of pressure to seriously damage anything in the neck(trachea, jugular, esophagus, spine, spinal cord etc).
realistically all that will happen from any throat strike(with the exception of blades) is that the person will be hurt(though not enough to end a fight, perhaps enough to allow you time to run or press an advantage), will probably cough a few times, and that will be it. if the throat was as weak and vulnerable as people claim people would be killed playing football, swimming, diving, playing soccer, wrestling, rugby, etc. and frequently too, not to mention falling asleep standing up would be extremely dangerous.

Throats are best for choking not striking. You wanna strike something, try hitting a more prominent target like the jaw, the chin, the temple or the body.

don't go there if you don't want to end up in jail. Striking the throat can kill. If you hit the larynx hard enough you risk breaking it resulting in the victim choking. It's dangerous stuff best not practised
