people restrict calories for the most part in order to lose excess body fat and live a more healthful life once they have lost the fat. 1200 calories is a safe level of caloric intake to effect weight loss. There are still enough for metabolism and healing, but not enough to encourage fat storage by the body.

1200 calories is the caloric intake per day that is recommended as the very minimum one should consume, any less than that and one is considered to have entered starvation.

Many people believe that by reducing their daily intake to 1200 calories they will lose weight and not lower their metabolism. This is utterly false. Everyone's daily minimum is different depending on weight, age, height, and activity level. Meaning that someone may need to eat almost 1800calories before their body thinks it's starving and begins to store fat and get rid of its muscle. People only follow this 1200calorie plan because they are ignorant and desperate to lose weight.

I only eat that much a day because I'm not that hungry. It's not because I am on a diet because I am already skinny.
