I am a writer, and working on a charector background.
The man graduated from the Naval Academy, and that makes him a Leutinant right?
Ok what are the steps towards Rear Admirl and then full Admirl?
I have heard of "Officer training School" but is that for people who've also been to Annapolis?
How long does it take from say... high school, and the Academy for someone to raise (normally) all the way to Admirl?
Can anyone list any particular schools, jobs that a officer might have to hold?
Some i listed were:
After Annapolis he became a pilot, then went on to (cant think of the name of the position) the guy who guides planes in to land on a carrier, to CAG, to officer training school, to another tour or two but on another carrier.
but he was a very good learner and leader, and his reputation for brains, gets him lots of offers, and he returns to land to work at the Pentagon, and raises more in ranks and to assistant to the Joint Chiefs.
At 39 he finally gets

word that he is selected for Rear Admirl.

lots of holes in your research. Let's fill some:
When one graduates from the USNA (US Naval Academy) he is commissioned an Ensign in the US Navy (or a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marines if he/she chose that option).
OTS is ANOTHER way to get a commission (ROTC and Annapolis are the others)
It takes about 27 to 28 years after being commissioned before you would get looked at for admiral

1.)Officers graduate as Ensigns or 2nd Lt, if they choose the USMC option
2.) The Naval ranks are, in order: Ensign, Lt (Junior grade) Lt. Lt. Commander, Commander, Captain, Rear Admiral (Lower half),*This used to be Commodore, which was ONLY used in wartime, and has since been phased-out. Rear Admiral (Upper half), Vice Admiral, Admiral, Fleet Admiral. The link will show the insignia worn by each of these.
3.) "Officer Training School" is Air Force, not Navy.
4.) The degree list in the Navy leans heavy on sciences for unrestricted line officers. For an aviator, his next major stop would be Pensacola for flight training, then to a "RAG" (Replacement air Group") squadron for the finishing touches. He woud have to qualify for carrier landing and takeoff. After that, and a tour or two in a squadron, during which, if he qualified, he could draw duties as landing officer. This is done by selected officers in each squadron during a carrier deployment, these officers are still in a flying status. To get a CAG slot, he would have to be a squadron commander FIRST, (And of a fighter or attack squadron!) and then be selected from ALL the squadron commanders. A CAG slot is one of those penultimate career-postings, after which the only other shipboard slot would be C.O. of a carrier and then carrier battle-group commander. Pentagon duties may happen, and that at any stage, but once you are a CAG, you aren't going back to being just a squadron commander again, nor will you get sent to Anapolis as an instructor. You might be the C.O. of Anapolis as a "twighlight-tour" just before retirement. The hot-runners get put on staff positions with the JCS. THE penultimate position would be Secretary of the Navy, and it would take a bit past 39 to get it without a few combat promotions to boost his seniority numbers. Any questions? U.S.N. (Ret)

No offense, but if you are a writer, use spell check or a dictionary.
Annapolis is a four year college for Naval/Marine Corps personnel who will be commissioned an ENSIGN (Navy) or SECOND LIEUTENANT (Marine Corps) upon graduation. The process of promotion during a non-combat role is slow and tedious. You can find a listing of rank by going to any search engine and typing in Navy Officer Rank. I do not know of any Rear Admiral less than 48-50 years old having risen in peace time. A graduate from any military academy has OCS included in the education process and it is not necessary for him/her to repeat the course (as in your outline). It takes 8 years to become a fighter pilot (depending on what you fly), another two for experience and schooling for LSO (Landing Signal Officer). Cag's are experienced flight officers with either combat or squadron leadership. LSO's would have to return to flying for a couple of years and distinguish themselves before being considered for a CAG position.
As far as progressing up the ladder to Admiral, that is a long an costly endeavor. You can't just go to school for it. it requires years of experience, academic progress, and MATURITY. Admirials are selected based on numerous points acquired in their career. To reach the level you are calling for they have to go to several high level schools requiring a specific time in grade at rank held.
To write a story or a book you first have to put in a lot of time doing proper research on the subject you write about. Do the research, see how hard it is to make admiral and I think you will have a deeper appreciation for the Navy Way. In doing so, it will make you a better writer.

Initial Graduates are Ensigns or 2nd Lts(depends on if he took Marine Option. 2 years as an O1. 2-3 years as an O2. minimum five years as on O3. 5-7 years as an O4. 8-10 as an O5. ditto for O6. assuming he is Sh!tHot and has all the stars align, earliest is 25years to be up for Flag. figure earliest he could have graduated was 22, more like 47 before he can even THINK about putting stars on.

the two branches (unquestionably all of them) are very aggressive so a ways as OCS/OTS admission is in contact, and a three.2 GPA isn't something ideas-blowing... in case you propose on doing some thing contained in the militia that throughout particular pertains to accounting, you'll be doing genuinely the comparable job in any branch, only donning a distinctive uniform. the final component so you might do as quickly as you're waiting to get involved by making use of for OCS is to pay a pass to to recruiters from the two branches to make certain what the region is. suited now every person is lowering on workers meaning each thing that gets taken into consideration for procuring that slot turns into much extra important.
