Air bag

They'd be of VERY limited use.

A rear-end collision makes your car go *faster*. You are normally seated with your spine against the back of the car seat, and a headrest immediately behind your head. That's where you would experience the impact, and consequently, you don't need much extra protection.

You would have a tendency to "bounce" off the seat and the headrest, and the airbag would explode in time to minimize this. If your car was not impacted squarely, the side air bags might also come into use to protect you from impacting the doors of the car.

But as a rule, you don't need much protection in a rear-end collision, so it would be hard for any contraption to provide much additional protection.

The only way that they would be of any use is if you were hit at high speed from behind and it slammed you into something else, activating the air bag. It is the only way that I can think of that the front air bag would deploy in a rear collision.

Hope this answers your question and you have a great day!

Frontal air bags are designed to deploy in moderate to severe frontal collisions.

These air bags are not designed to deploy in side impact, rear impact or rollover collisions.

Safety belts provide your best protection in these types of crashes.

Safety belts also help keep vehicle occupants away from air bags when they are deploying, thus reducing the chances of air bag-induced injuries.

In addition, safety belts help position the occupant properly to get the maximum benefit from the deploying air bag.

well in my opinion air bags are stupid, however the answer to your question would be only to the person behind you or causing the collision unless you're getting plowed by a train or semi in which case my first comment applies... stupid unless you really drive around not knowing that a semi or train is going to crush you... stupid? I'd rather avoid an accident and not have my vision blocked, why would you put your vehicle in a situation where your could not control it and feared your life?

No. They are not made to deploy in a rear end collision. The sensors that deploy them are located in the front of the vehicle. If you are the one being hit, you would be pushed back into the seat.
