I've been an atheist for quite a while, but recently I've been thinking of switching over to Christianity. The only problem is that I'm afraid I may use my mind too much to be a Christian. I understand that being Christian involves the sacrifice of your reason to the Bible, and I'm thinking I may not have the lack of knowledge that it takes. I believe in the big bang and that homosexuality is a natural occurance, which are concepts of reason and scientific backing that I would have to give up upon conversion. Anyone know what I should do?

Ever wonder why you're so against it?
Why would you be against it for no reason, unless God and Satan were real, and negative influences were effecting you?
Why would you even care enough to beeyatch about it if it wasn't real?
Aside from that, the Big Bang Theory is a load of ****.
Without God, there wouldn't have even been such thing as the "nothing" that the Big Bang Theory originated from. How would the universe just come out of nowhere? Where would the nowhere have came from?
God created everything. You wouldn't be complaining about your views of Christianity if it wasn't for God creating you.

By no means have I given up my devotion to reason because of my relationship with Christ. As far as the Big Bang goes; how did that happen? An infinite amount of matter squeezed into an infinitely small space sounds like the work of God to me. The Genesis allegory has thus far been backed by science and reason. The problem arises when people take the word "day" (and many of the events in the allegory) literally. The Bible makes rich use of the Semitic love for metaphor.

I work in ultraviolet technology and my wife is a biologist, but neither of us have a problem with reconciling science and religion. An inability to do so, as far as I can see, reveals a lack of knowledge about one or both subjects. Please feel free to e-mail me with any specific concerns you might have. I'm very happy to hear about your interest in Christianity, and I'll be more than willing to help you with your journey.

Keep searching, you're on a roll!
GOD gave you the gift of intellect;-} you're expected to use it.
Catholic Christians do not surrender their intelligence.
We do not take everything in the Bible literally, we trust GOD.
Evolution & the Big Bang are scientific theories.
They attempt to tell us how creation was made.
The Bible only talks about why, through primitive myths.
We don't know why homosexuality happens;-{
but the mis-use of sex is intrinsically wrong.
You'd be welcomed in the Catholic Church;-}
that's where most of a billion Christians are.

Being a Christian is being with God, read and understand the Bible -- some of todays social issues are addressed therein (not necessarily as interpreted in the same way as you'll see offered here). Use your reason in prayer and make contact with God he gave you your intelligence and expects you to use it. Being a Christian doesn't mean you have to have a Catholic, Baptist or any other club card. If you find your beliefs similar to one of the denominations it gives you solace and a group to share and bolster your life in God.

God Bless you and I'm praying for ya.

Where in the world did you get the idea you have to sacrifice reason?? Many of the great minds in history have been Christians.
The only requirement for being a Christian is to confess Jesus Christ as your savior.
The Catholic Church has great inquiry classes for anyone wishing to know more. No committment required. Check it out- go to your local Diocesan web page for more info.
God Bless

I get the feeling you are pulling our collective leg...

So, to be Christian is to abandon reason?

Tell me, how does the big bang go against Christianity? If anything, it supports the concept of all matter coming into existence at a moment by a creator.

To abandon reason is to believe it just happened by itself; matter came from nothing.... yea, right....

And homosexuality is a "natural" occurrence? What is natural about it? Does a homosexual inherit this from his or her homosexual parents? Again, reason is lacking.

Sounds like you have everything upside down my friend.

Man's spirit is made for the Spirit of God just as a woman is made for a man. The longing you feel is the Spirit of God drawing you near. There are many intellectuals in Christendom and you will understand later that the most intelligent thing a person could do is accept Christ.
His burden is easy and his yoke is light and when his Spirit enters your mortal body you will see that there is no greater high.
Keep seeking and commit your all you will not regret it.

You don't really sound sincere for some reason. You may be mixing up Christianity with other religions that ask you to have a blind faith and just pray about if it's true or not.

If you are sincere, however, please use your mind even more.

Please read "Evidence That Demands A Verdict" by Josh McDowell and use your mind to discern what he says. That would be a good start.

it is good to think and to reason, do not let anyone tell you otherwise!!

Personal belief in gray issues such as evolution and homosexuality are not 100% important as long as you believe. (Remember, there are Christians that do believe that evolution could have happened...)
The Bible (I believe) to be inspired by God and you have to use reason, not sacrifice it, to understand it sometimes.
Even though faith is believing without seeing, there are some things that we can grasp and make sense out of (despite what rude ppl on this website say).

I'm praying for you

There is nothing better for getting through life in this world that man not God has destroyed than being a Christian. The sacrifice that Jesus Christ Who is God The Son and our Savior had made for us to be able to be forgiven by God the Father and The Resurrection of Jesus Christ, His rising from the dead, is His reassurance that life does indeed go on after we have left this world. I could never be Buddhist or Hindu or Jewish or Muslim because they lack the most important knowledge of life. My faith in The Trinity of God -- The Father, The Son Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit of Jesus Christ is so strong that no human being or Satan himself could persuade me to not believe in what The Bible tells me. Once you start reading The New Testament, you will find yourself on your knees crying and thanking God for the sacrifice He made for us to be forgiven of our sins.

God made the universe with the sky on the first day, made the day light and night light the second day, made the water on the land the third day, made the plant life for vegetation on the fourth day, made the animals the fifth day, and made man and woman on the sixth day, and rested on the seventh day -- hence Sunday being the day of rest.

God pretty much made everything He made each day in a big bang. Think about it! He is amazing for all that He has done for us.

God loves all His children (us,sinners) but not the sin (murder, adultery, suicide, homosexuality, conceitedness, pride, envy, jealousy, gluttony (eating too much food or buying too many unnecessary things) slothfulness (laziness, stagnant, watching television all day) lust, and greed.

God will never send you to hell for committing a sin! He will only send you to hell: if you denounce Him as God once you learn about Him, if you don't believe that He gave His only Begotten Son Jesus Christ to die for our sins once you learn about Jesus, if you don't believe that Jesus Christ is God the Son once you learn about Jesus Christ, and if you don't believe that Jesus Christ rose from the dead which He did on the third day after dying on the cross once you learn about Jesus Christ.
