An illegal immigrant raped and killed two teenage girls in Texas. He's on death row, and International Law is telling Texas that they can't execute him. Bush, OF COURSE, says to follow International Law (protecting the illegal). Texas argued that the international court ruling has no weight in Texas and that Bush has no power to order its enforcement. What will happen to OUR OWN laws if Texas gives in?
Also do you think this Illegal should face the Death Penalty?

Susan, I think that's the risk you take when you hop the border illegally. If he was so concerned about his own embassy, he wouldn't be here illegally.

this is a crucial event and I think the Supreme Court will rule in favor of Texas, otherwise we are saying our own laws and our own courts are subject to international review, it would take away power from the states. I don't what Bush is thinking with this one. How can he not stand on the side of Texas and the US? Instead he sides with illegal alien murder/rapist and the International Court for a new hearing?

Yes, he should receive the death penalty but I'm not sure just how much control the state of Texas now has over this. We can only hope that the Supreme Court will do the right thing. Even if they don't the worst that will happen is that he will be tried again and knowing Texans as I do they will convict again and the guy will be put to death, it will just take longer.

Regardless of your status--travelling in other countries legally (with a passport) or illegally (you snuck over the border)--if you commit a crime in a country then, if tried and found guilty, you should face the same punishments as a citizen of that country. That is the simplest solution and would apply everywhere automatically.
In this instance, since the guilty party was sentened to death then he should be put to death, regardless of his national origin.
On the flip side, this would mean that Duane "Dog" Chapman should have been tried for the crime of "bounty hunting" in Mexico when he captured a fugitive from American authorities. He knew the risks when he went there and yet chose to go there anyway.

You do the crime-You do the time. No matter who or where you are.
President Bush is so far out of line on this one. His whole demeanor with regards the illegal situation has me wondering what he owes the Mexican govt.?
If the dude had come here on a legal visa, I could see extradition back to his homeland. Being here illegally, I say "You take your chances".
And I do believe it would be a grave mistake to let the world court dictate our internal affairs.

If we violated their rights as determined by our courts, we need to enforce our principles protecting rights. If we didn't, what an international court says is gas in the wind.

Smudge - you are entitled to your opinion both of the death penalty and of our gun laws. However, you are not entitled to impose those opinions on a sovereign nation, which we are.

The government has been following international law for years now. That is how we lost private property rights. They are also responsible for No Child Left Behind and the smoking bans.
The new world order has been implemented - welcome to chaos.
I think he should be strung up and shot!

Seeing as v. few of the countries that do still have it have anything like the level of crime the US has it is likely that the opposite of what you expect to happen would; it's called the law of unintended consequences. The death penalty means nothing left to lose after the first mistake, of course 19th century gun laws will have to be overhauled as well, hopefully you are doomed to become more civilised given enough time.

How would you feel if someone you knew were arrested overseas for a serious crime and was not told he could speak to your own embassy for assistance? That is what happened in this case.
Americans may reap what we sow on this one.
